June 13, 2017

Recently global thought leaders in eDiscovery converged in Cape Town to discuss trends in the eDiscovery market and in the delivery of legal services in general. The panel presented a fantastic diversity of knowledge, experience and views, comprising:

Nigel Kissack, Head of Commercial Litigation at Irwin Mitchell and formerly Head of Litigation at Pinsent Masons, a top 15 UK law firm. Nigel led the setup of Pinsent Masons’ offshore Litigation Support team.

Laura Kibbe, Of Counsel at Morgan Lewis Bockius LLP, Philadelphia-based litigation firm with more than 700 litigators; recognised by Law360 for ‘stellar litigation work’. Laura has led teams at Epiq Systems, Thomson Reuters and Pfizer.

Terry Harrison, Consultant and former Managing Director at Hobs Legal Docs. Terry has worked with global law firms and corporates to design and deliver eDiscovery solutions.

Waseema Harrison, Senior Manager at Deloitte (South Africa) and has extensive experience in eDiscovery technology solutions.

David Holme, founder and CEO of Exigent and is considered a thought leader in legal services delivery.

eDiscovery is gaining momentum amongst law firms and corporates alike, and the South African market is set to emulate global trends and growth in this practice area , evident by the attendance of a number of top firms and corporates, including Webber Wentzel, Bowman Gilfillan, Norton Rose, Schlumberger, Anglo American, Rio Tinto and Deloitte, who had come to hear panellists’ views on how technology and innovative resourcing are changing the very nature of legal services delivery. While the discussion topics were aimed at a South African audience, a market just coming into its own in terms of LPO and legal technology, the speakers addressed a number of issues with global relevance including fixed fee pricing, increasing data and new technology.

Laura Kibbe and David Holme shared valuable insight into how law firms and eDiscovery providers are collaborating to drive value for corporate clients through efficient resourcing, best practice processes and fit-for-purpose legal technology, and early adoption benefits in our legal landscape defined by fixed fees and increasing price pressure.

“We are looking to work totally in collaboration with law firms, enhancing and improving delivery models. It’s no longer about cheaper.  It’s about better and that’s about deploying technology, knowing how to use it and adding efficiency to the process.  That’s a total change even in the last two to three years.”  David Holme, CEO, Exigent
